Reuters reports that a common parasite is linked to self-harm and suicide in women, although Lou Weiss, M.D., M.P.H., notes that the overall risk remains low. Dr. Weiss remarks that because toxoplasma gondii resides in the brain, there has long been a suspicion it affects human behavior. Dr. Weiss is professor of medicine and of pathology and co-director of Einstein’s Global Health Center.
